MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE

Fall back in love with your Markham yard with a new tree

Trees are essential to life

Trees provide us with oxygen, they boost our moods (scientifically proven!), they even provide shelter for animals and food for our tables. But as a property owner in Markham, you might be more interested in how trees improve your curb appeal, how they can add shade to your yard or give you privacy where you need it most. Whatever the reason may be to plant a tree, you’ll want to make sure that you’re doing the job correctly–and that’s where we can help!

Knowing where to plant a tree

If you’re planning on doing this yourself, you will need to do some research. As a first step, you’ll need to consider what the tree will look like at its maturity, including the size, height and shape. A very important consideration is whether the tree will have enough room to grow and if it’s the type of tree that thrives being planted next to others, or does better on its own.

Before you start digging, you will want to make sure you’re not planting a tree anywhere near a power line or above buried cables or wires on your property. If you’re planning on doing this yourself, we’d recommend contacting the city of Markham municipality to avoid causing any safety hazards to utility lines.

Once you’ve found a spot that suits your needs and has passed the safeguards, you’ll want to make sure the area gets the right amount of sunlight and shade for that particular species of tree so it can thrive. The good news is, you don’t need to worry about any of this if you hire one of our trained professionals to handle everything for you.

How to prepare your soil

Soil is everything when it comes to the success of growing your tree to its full potential. Most trees do better in fertile and clammy soil. If you’re working with extremely sandy or heavy clay soils your best bet is finding a tree that is suitable to that environment, otherwise you’ll face issues down the road once the roots have surpassed your backfilled soil.

There needs to be enough air circulation (not too tightly packed) and proper drainage to avoid root rot. After you’ve prepared your soil, it’s time to get digging! As a rule of thumb, the planting hole shouldn’t be any deeper than the root ball of the tree and twice the width, allowing enough room to create soil conditions that allow the roots to successfully grow.

Taking care of your tree

Now that you’ve gone through the hard work of planting your tree, you’ll want to give it the proper care it needs. To help reduce weeds from growing, apply a few inches of mulch on top of the soil, but not too close to the trunk–this also helps to keep in the moisture.

Newly planted trees will need more water at first. Aim to start by watering your tree every 5 days and then gradually reduce the frequency to once a week, unless you’re experiencing a very dry season. If you are exposed to high winds, you should consider staking your trees so they don’t fall over in the first year before they’ve reached maturity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Everything you need to know about Markham tree planting

How often should I water my tree?

This will all depend on where you’re located and if you get a lot of rain. If it isn’t raining frequently, make sure to generously water your tree every couple of days to avoid having the soil dry out. It’s always a good idea to check the soil to see if it feels damp to touch. If you’re using a hose, you’ll likely need about twenty minutes, repeated two times a week.

Why should I plant native trees?

Just like animals do not do well outside of their natural habitat, trees will also suffer if they’ve been planted in a strange environment. If you want to see your trees thriving, make sure to research which native species of trees grow in your area, otherwise you might have trouble trying to introduce these extoic plants in your backyard.

How far from the property line can I plant a tree?

First step is to check with your municipality to make sure you are aware of any bylaws. Typically speaking, trees can be planted on your property line as long as they are 10 feet away from the street or any fire hydrants. If you are looking to plant a larger tree, you will want to make sure you’re even further back from any buildings or streets–roughly 50-60 feet away.

Is my soil good enough for tree planting?

Making sure your soil is healthy enough and has the right conditions for growth will dictate how well your trees will grow. Have there been any heavy metals, toxins or pesticides in the area? These chemicals can impede the growth of your new tree.

If you live in an area that has sand, stones and rocks present, you will want to make sure you’re adding in compost and soil to provide an optimal growing environment. Do you live on a newly constructed property? Typically when construction workers build a house, they remove all of the surrounding topsoil, which is essential for vegetation growth.

How do I avoid root damage?

It starts with making sure you’re planting your tree in the right spot – away from any buildings, streets, or foundations. As roots continue to grow they seek out water, so you’ll want to make sure there isn’t anything nearby that will prevent them from spreading out.

Another common issue is that if roots are not planted deep enough, this causes them to start growing above ground, potentially wreaking havoc on sidewalks or walking trails. Be careful not to run over roots with your lawn mower – you’ll want to avoid those areas by using trimmers instead.
